As we walk through this Holy Week, today we come to a very important day. On this day, we remember and reflect on the time Jesus spent preparing His disciples. He chose to use the very familiar Seder or Passover meal as a teaching moment to pour into His followers. He knew what the following days would involve and how life as they had come to expect it was about to change.

What weighs heavy on my heart this morning is the idea that Jesus knew these very people – the closest of His followers, these He loved deeply – and knew they loved Him as best they could – these very people would each fall away. He would walk the road to the cross alone.

And yet, He took time to tenderly and intentionally model for them what true love calls for – putting others first and serving them. He took a towel and basin and lowered Himself literally to wash their feet. The task of washing feet was relegated to the lowliest of servants. The One who was in the beginning with God and is God, bowed down and washed the feet of the people who would use those same feet to run away in just a few hours and leave Him to face the humility of a mock trial and torturous execution alone.

He did all this for each of them. He did this for each of us.

That is how much our Jesus loves each of us! Sit with this picture today.
