Be Still

Monday’s are normally busy days for most of us.  We have an entire week in front of us with lots of appointments, tasks and things to get done.

But what if we started this week a little differently?  What if we started this week with a realization that God is in control?  What if we started this week with being still?

Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

I want to encourage you, no matter the time of day or even the day of the week in which you are reading this, stop.

Pause right here and be still before God.  Know that God is present.  Know that God cares for you.  Know that God is in control.

Be still.

I Am Amazed!

Today, as I waited on my youngest to finish cross country practice, I listened to the Pray-As-You-Go devotional podcast.

The scripture reading was familiar from the Gospel of Luke chapter 2.  You can read it here.

As I listened to these words read, I pictured Simeon in the temple, meeting Jesus, the Messiah, as an infant.  I thought about the overwhelming joy he must have felt – the wonder and amazement that the chosen One of God was in his very arms.

In the translation read on the podcast, the word “amazed” was used to describe the reaction of Joseph and Mary at what they were hearing about Jesus.

Then the question came from the guide, “Are you amazed by Jesus?”

That question has been lingering in my mind ever since.

As I have thought about that question, there are many things that have come to mind as to the amazement I feel because of Jesus.

The most amazing thing is that he has called me out – that he chose me and gave me a new life – I would be wandering through life with no direction and no purpose if not for Jesus’ amazing and magnificent grace!

What about you – do you find Jesus amazing?

Yesterday morning I went out to my car to head to church.  I had a meeting at 9 and I was on schedule to be early.  I got in the car and the battery was dead.  So I pulled my wife’s car around to give my car a jump.  My car started right up so I removed the cables, pulled my wife’s car back into its spot and got behind the wheel of my car to head to my meeting.

As I pulled out of the driveway, I noticed a new warning light I had never seen before.  It said, Reduced Engine Power.  I had no idea what that meant (other than the obvious) so I looked in the manual.  The manual told me that it is a safety measure the engine is programed to perform when the car is over heating.  Of course my car had been sitting for over 12 hours so I knew that could not be the problem.  Under that explanation was another that said, it could just be that the sensor telling the motor that it was overheating could be faulty.  That made more sense.  So I headed off to my meeting with Reduced Engine Power.

What I did not know was that Reduced Engine Power translated into Reduced Engine Speed.  I think I topped out at 7 miles per hour!  I was nearly late to my meeting.  In fact, at one point it dawned on me that I could walk faster than my car was moving.  But at least I was creeping along in the right direction.

As I have reflected on that experience, it has caused me to think about my spiritual progression and the speed in which I progress as well as the power it takes to get there (more on the power idea tomorrow).  We talked about that subject last week.  We often get in a hurry to get where we are going.  We easily grow impatient and think we will never “arrive.”  We need to remember that where we are headed is much more important than how fast we get there.  I have heard it said, “I have no idea where we are headed but at least we’re making good time.”  Where we are headed should be the bigger concern.  If we are a followers of the Way, then as long as our focus is on becoming more like Jesus and pleasing God, then the time it takes to get there is not nearly as important.

God knows that as humans, we will never be Jesus, so I believe God is not so concerned about whether or not you and I “arrive.”  God is ultimately concerned about who we become.

So today, make sure you are headed in the right direction but don’t panic if you don’t arrive by lunch time.

Be blessed today!

Keep It Simple

There is a quote (one of many around my office) that hangs above my desk by Charles Mingus and it says this:

Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that’s creativity.

As I sat in my prayer time this morning and reflecting on things, I noticed this quote.

Is this not true of our approach to Christian faith?  Have we not taken something beautifully simple and made it complicated?

When you think about the Christian faith, it really boils down to this: love God and love your neighbor.  That’s it.  We have built elaborate systems to help define what this means and how to do it, but the reality is – we have made it complicated.

Simplify your life today.  It’s easy to make things complicated.  It takes work to keep things simple.

Love God and love your neighbor.

On the way to the office this morning, I had the radio on (as usual) and heard a familiar song from @Manafest called Avalanche.  I had heard the song before, in fact, I have it on my iPod.  But for some reason, it struck a chord with me today.

The song speaks to a condition I am sure we can all relate to – that of being the prodigal child of God.  The words that caught my ear today were these, “Cause I’m the prodigal man of this avalanche, I’m going down, I’m going down, down.”

I suppose the reason these lines hit me is because I can relate them to times in my life when I have allowed my relationship with Jesus to stagnate and have felt the hopelessness of being all alone with little hope.

But the song moves the listener to hope with these lines, “Watched you chase a man down, watched you raise a man out, mercy on me, forever I’m free.”

I am reminded that regardless of how far I roam or wander, God actually pursues me and is there to offer mercy and grace and welcome me home into a renewed relationship.

Maybe today, things for you are great – your relationship with Jesus is just as it should be – if so, wonderful, file these thoughts for later use.

But perhaps today this song describes you.  Maybe today you feel caught in an avalanche of life, sliding farther away from where you want to be with little control or ability to stop it.  If that is you – take heart – Jesus wants to lift you out.

That is the wonder and beauty of mercy and grace.  It’s never too late to turn back to Jesus.

In the book of Micah, we find an interesting portrayal of a mock trial (you can read the story here) in which God brings a case against the people of Israel.  It is a descriptive account of God standing to state the case before the mountains and hills.

God points out that the people of Israel have been protected and shown provision through many situations from the exodus event from Egypt to the freedom from slavery and yet they have forgotten all of God’s blessings.

The people are then allowed to reply.  The reply comes in the form of a frustrated series of questions:  “What do you want from us – our first born?”

God probably should have smitten the people then but that is not what happened.  Instead, God gave an answer that is just as applicable and important today as it was in the day of the writing of the book of Micah.  Verse 8 of Micah chapter 6 says this:  “He has showed you, O man, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?  To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Act justly – handle yourself in such a way that you treat each person with whom you come in contact with respect and proper dignity.  This includes standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.

Love mercy – this may be more focused on the way we react to the way we are treated but also serves as a reminder to show others mercy.

Walk humbly with your God – a reminder that our lives are not our own.  This life is not about you or me, it is about pleasing God and working to further God’s plan and Kingdom.  Often, when we get caught up in serving God, piety can creep in and unchecked can turn to spiritual arrogance.  God says, “No!  Walk with me but do it in humility.”

Remember today, God’s expectations are really pretty simple – not easy – but simple.

Go out and act justly, love mercy and walk humbly today!

I don’t know about you but every once in a while I allow myself to become overwhelmed with all the things going on in my life – tasks at work, projects at home, car problems, etc.

It is easy to feel like I’m drowning.  This passage helped me today.  I encourage you to link to it and let it wash over you and fill your soul as it has done mine today.

If you need breathing room for your soul – let God be that for you today.

Have a blessed day.

Worth the Trip

Last night Bryson and I made a quick trip to Lubbock to pick up some items for a kitchen remodel project we have started at home.  We decided to try a new product that is used to adhere tile to walls without mortar – much cleaner and faster (if it works).

When we got back home, we read the box only to find that there are two different types of this product – one for counter tops and one for walls.  Guess which one we picked up?

So . . . this morning I got up early to be at Lowes by 7.  I was able t return the boxes of the product we got last night and then go and get the boxes that said “Walls.”  Funny how it says it right there on the package!

I wish I could say that my home improvement projects usually go more smoothly but that would not be factual.  In reality, most of my projects go just about like this – maybe I should learn to read.

But, on the way to Lubbock this morning, I had the most amazing time with God.  The sun was coming up and the horizon was covered by low clouds.  As the sun came up, it outlined the edges of the cumulus with a bright silver.  I experienced God in that picture.  It was just God and me and the sunrise – worth the trip.

How are you going to experience God today?

Have you ever gotten a “Thinking of You” card or call out of the blue for no reason at all?  How did it make you feel?

All of us would like to think that we would be missed if we were not around tomorrow.  All of us would like to think that others care for us.  The good thing is, the majority of us have people who love us.

But what have you planned for today that will add value to someone else?  Maybe it will be something as simple as a “Thinking of You” call.  Maybe you could pay for the items of the person in line behind you at the convenience store and simply say, “God loves you.”

Whatever you decide to do today, make a difference in someone else’s life.  That is what Jesus taught us to do and as followers of the Way, it is our calling.  I think that is what Jesus was teaching us here in this passage.  Take a look at what Jesus said and then go make a difference today.

Last night I couldn’t sleep.  So I got my earbud headphones and listened to the Jesuit devotional, Pray As You Go, devotional for yesterday.

The reading for the day was the story of a man who wanted to know what he needed to do to get to heaven.  Jesus pointed out that he needed to keep the commandments.  The man replied that he had been doing that since birth.  So Jesus responded with the instruction that the man must sell all he had and give the money to the poor and then come follow him.

The account says the man went away grieving because he had many possessions.

Listening to this reading did not help with my inability to sleep, in fact, it gave me something else with which to wrestle.  As I laid there pondering the story, I was reminded that following Jesus is really about surrender.  In order to truly follow Jesus, pleasing him and living as he lived must be our first priority.

This is a daily struggle.  I have mentioned this before but the problem with being a living sacrifice is that we have the ability to constantly crawl off the altar.  Daily we must commit to surrendering our desires to Jesus and taking on his desires as our own.  I can say that over time this becomes a bit easier, but don’t let anyone ever tell you they have it mastered!

So what is Jesus asking you to surrender to today?
