Here is your chance. This Sunday we will be discussing the importance real community and I want to hear from you. How would you define community?
When I think of community – particularly as it pertains to the family of God, ideas such as unity, common purpose, love, grace, selflessness and hope all come to mind.
But as I refine my thoughts on the subject, I am asking God to inspire you to share your thoughts with me.
If I am going to stand before God’s people and describe God’s idea of community, I think it is only fitting to hear what God’s family thinks.
Let me hear from you.
You can reply here or if you want your thoughts to be more confidential feel free to email me at brian@firstcorpus.org.
I appreciate your prayerful responses.
Blessings on your day.
Good Morning Dr. Hill.
In response to the question, “What is community?” I think overtime our experiences lead to changing ideas of what it means to be in Christ. In the same way, my idea of community has evolved. For a long time, my idea of community was more superficial. We are suppose to be in community, so let’s do community. Yet it is not enough to do community. We have to become “The Community.”
My thoughts on community go something like this: To be in community means living life together inside and outside the church in and through Jesus Christ, in visible fellowship, love and in unity. There is a purpose for community. It is not simply meeting together. As you can see, it is not just community when we come together in the church, but when we come together in community outside the church. This also bodes with the idea of being in community in Sunday school and small groups.
There are many Scriptures that come to mind when I consider the aforesaid. I think the one that has always impacted me comes from the book of Hebrews.
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near (Hebrews 10:23-25).
I am not sure how this lines up with what you said, because I have attempted to answer the question without reading your post past the initial question. I appreciate you giving us the opportunity to consider questions such as these to help FBC-CC develop our understanding of what we are to become. First and foremost as you have often said: “Are we more like Christ today than we were last week? Yesterday?
Blessings and Grace,
Russell Howard
