A Labor Day Reminder

Yesterday was Labor Day here in the US.  A national holiday instituted in 1887, Labor Day is a day set aside to celebrate the workers of America.  What began as a way to recognize the economic and social efforts of the American workforce has become a day off from work (at least for some) when we have cook-outs and spend time with family and friends.

While that is a wonderful thing to do, I thought for a second this morning I would point out that God created us to be diligent and work.  I was taught that there is great satisfaction in a hard day’s work.  It is a healthy experience to get to the end of the day and turn around and look at what was accomplished through the day.

But is that all there is to work?  Just a sense of accomplishment in a job well done?  What about those days when you lay down at night and think, “I can’t think of one thing I actually completed today”?

Depending on your job, you may have many days like that.

But maybe we should approach our work with a different attitude.  Perhaps true fulfillment comes in working to please God.  When we focus on doing our best for God’s glory, even the menial tasks take on new meaning.  Brother Lawrence, a Carmelite brother from the middle ages said that he felt the presence of God among the pots and pans in the kitchen just much as he did at holy communion.

Today, approach each task with an effort to please God with your work.

See if it makes a difference.

Be blessed today.

Thanks for Reading

It has been a whirlwind of a summer.  Some things have been set aside while more pressing things have consumed my attention.  Does that ever happen to you?

Unfortunately, my writing has had to take a back seat for the past month or so.  Even today, I sat down at my computer at 8 am and now, at 10, I am actually getting to this post.  Between failing air conditioners, leaking gas lines, camps, Vacation Bible School and all the other unscheduled things, writing has had to be pushed to the side.

In the midst of all the chaos, people still continue stopping by the site and clicking through the posts.  It is a blessing to know that sometimes, something I say makes an impact in another person’s life.

I don’t say it often enough, but thanks for reading my ramblings.

I plan on getting back on track with more consistency in my writing.  Keep checking in.

Be blessed this week.

As Jesus followers, we know that we should live in such a way to bring honor to him.  If you have read much of my ramblings then you know I am always pushing to be true to our calling.  But today I have a simple question for you,  what is your motivation for following Jesus?

That’s it. Leave me your answers here or by email – bhill33@me.com

God Says . . .

What is on your mind today? What is weighing heavy on your heart?

Maybe it is trouble at work. God says, “I’m here – remember I gave you that job.”

Maybe it is a strained marriage. God says, ” I called you into this relationship – hold strong.”

Maybe it is uncertainty about the future. God says, “I hold the future in my hands, nothing surprises me – trust me.”

Whatever is on your heart today, lay it down at God’s feet and lay yourself into God’s arms. God is saying to you in a soft but strong voice, “I’ve got this.”

Be blessed today!

When I went to bed last night there was a half gallon of milk in the refrigerator.  When I got up this morning, there was an empty milk jug on the counter.  Sometime between midnight and 7 am, that milk disappeared.  This is the joy of having three teenage boys at home.  It wouldn’t be so bad except for the chocolate residue in the bottom of a large cup, also sitting on the counter – you would think they would at least hide the evidence.  But it is no secret that milk is an important staple in our home – especially with the occasional addition of some chocolate syrup.

I love having boys.  I love my boys (quickly becoming men).

As a father, part of my job is making sure my boys know I love them.  They need to know that when it seems like  everyone else in the world is against them, they can count on me.  That is the challenge of being a parent.  But I accept that challenge.

How about you?  What are you going to do today to make sure your child has no doubt in her or his mind that you love them?

For me – part of that will be restocking the refrigerator with milk sometime today!

Shane Hipps, in his book, Flickering Pixels, deals with the role of the heart in spirituality.  He explains that it is the heart – emotions – that drives desire and without desire our spirituality dries up.

. . . the most damaging effect of suppressing the heart is that it deadens desire.  That deep longing for life, love, and God fades.  Instead, we come to expect less from life.  We acquire the bland taste of a domesticated god who resides somewhere in our head.  But our head is not home for the divine.  The head helps us understand the divine from a safe distance.  This is a powerful and valuable enterprise to be sure, but there is a difference between knowing about God and knowing God.

I don’t know about you but I do not care to serve a “domesticated god.”  The God I choose to serve is full of mystery and strength, love and grace, justice and mercy.  There is no domestication of the one true God – and we should rejoice in that fact!

How faded is your desire?  How badly do you want to move beyond knowing about God to a point of truly knowing God?  Do not seek knowledge – seek a relationship.

Father, may you fill us with desire to truly know you today and to grow in our relationship with you!

If you read my post last Thursday, you know that Kristi and I got away to celebrate 2o years of marriage.  In my planning for our time together, I wanted to have at least one romantic meal.  I did my research and even emailed the San Antonio Visitors center to get some ideas.  After all that, I decided on a restaurant that would be the perfect choice.  I even made reservations to ensure that our evening would be memorable.

We took a cab to the area and arrived early to make sure that we could find the site of our candle light experience.  Promptly at 7:30, we walked up to the hostess and I said rather smugly, “We are the Hill’s and we have a reservation for 2.”

The hostess picked up two menus and asked us to follow her to our special table.  It did not take too long, as we strolled through a restaurant of empty tables, to figure out that we were the only ones in the joint.  As I looked around, I could see a sheer curtain separating our fine dining from the breakfast buffet line.  Come to find out, we were in a hotel restaurant in downtown San Antonio – and yes, we were the only ones there!

What I thought was going to be a fine dining experience in an eclectic, romantic atmosphere, turned out to be something similar to a trip to Denny’s with candles and linen napkins.  Not what I had envisioned at all!  Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy Denny’s as much as the next guy, but not for a romantic dinner to celebrate 20 years of wedded bliss!

Kristi was a great sport – I think she could see my embarrassment and disappointment.  But the one good thing about being married for 20 years, when it was all said and done, we had a great time and now we have a humorous memory of our romantic evening in San Antonio.

Have you ever had a “date” with your spouse that didn’t turn out as you planned?

Still Skiing

Two days of skiing has about got me worn out – and one more to go.  It has been a great time so far.  Pray for our group today.  We ski until 4 and then get on a charter bus to drive all night (14 hours or so) arriving home around breakfast time tomorrow.

One of the things that I have been reminded of on this trip is that I am not as young as I once was but I have had to keep going.  Speaking of going, I have to hit the slopes.  I will have lots of stories to share in future posts.

Have a blessed day!

I did a lot of driving yesterday, about 8 hours in the car.  But somewhere between Waco and Levelland I saw a billboard that said, “Eternity is a long time.”  As I drove, I thought a lot about that statement.  Of course, on the surface it is somewhat comical in the sense that, of course it is a long time – eternity means forever.

But I began to the think about the meaning behind the statement – the idea that eternity is forever, so we better make sure we know where we are going to spend it.  I also began to think about the assumption that this statement puts out there.  We tend to think of eternity as a place, or at least period that begins after we die.  Honestly, when you hear the question, “Where are you going to spend eternity?”  what is the first thing you think of?  For me, my mind automatically jumps to where I will go when I die.

But here is something I want to challenge you with:  as Jesus followers, eternity has already begun (in all honesty, eternity has already begun for all others as well).  So maybe we need to think more along the lines that what we are doing today is part of that eternity.

More concretely, think of it this way:  we don’t need to think of a separation between this life and the next – we simply change addresses when we die.  When we choose to follow Jesus and bend our will to his, we have already begun our eternity.  And what we do here and now not only carries with us, it also affects the eternity of others.

So since you are already living in eternity, what are you going to do today to live like you will live forever?

Email-a-Prayer

Today I woke up with a conviction.  No, I am not headed to jail – a different kind of conviction.  As Christians we are always quick to say, “I’ll be praying for you” when we listen to the needs of others.  But how often do we follow through?  Prayer is such an important part of our Christian walk.  It is through prayer that we have the ability to come into the realization of God’s presence in our lives.  It is in prayer that we are molded and shaped into God’s will.  It is also in prayer that we lift others to our God for intervention.

I try each day that I write to be relevant and real, offering my thoughts to you in hopes that you might find some inspiration or healing or encouragement.

But this format is pretty one-sided.  So here is what I am adding to my blog today – Email-a-Prayer.  I would like you to feel welcome to email me any prayer request you might want to share with me.  It will be completely confidential and what you share is up to you.  I will commit to you that I will pray for you as soon as I receive that email.

I am working on making this a click and type tool but I am not there yet.  So as bad as I hate this, for right now, just copy the email address at the bottom right of this page and paste it into the “To” blank on the email system of your choice.  As soon as I have the link set up, you will be able to just click on the email address and send me an email (I hope).

Let me hear from you.
